Lunch in Newcastle near the water?

pascalls's Photo pascalls 14 Jun 2019

Hi,

Just after recommendations for somewhere nice for lunch in Newcastle, maybe near the water? We’re catching up with friends and Newcastle will be kind of central for both of us, but neither of us have been before so not sure which areas we should be looking at. There will be 4 adults & 2 teens.

Thanks!

ETA It will be a Sunday for lunch.

On the water? Scratchleys, beautiful seafood, plus other things, possibly a tad expensive. Rustica is also amazing, delicious tapas style menu.

The Honeysuckle Hotel has a nice outside dining area over the water, but is a bit of a glorified pub, but should be nice on a Sunday at lunch time (Saturday night not so much). Actually the restaurant opposite them is also great (forget the name sorry). Close to Cold Rock for dessert too :)

The Merewether Beach house, or the Merewether Beach Hotel are also nice for a view. Not sure about the food, but they’re always busy.

Scratchleys
Rustica
All the cafes in Honeysuckle are all good.

If you want really casual, Scrachley's have a fish and chip shop that sells take away too - take a blanket and picnic right on the water. Go for a walk out to Nobby's.

Another for Scratchleys even if you aren't a seafood lover ...

Forgot about that one. It’s possibly just as popular as the restaurant on a beautiful sunny day! Perfect spot to walk along the Harbour after lunch with a full belly too.

Merewether Surf House has a couple of different places - there is the higher-end restaurant ($30-$40 for mains), the bar and downstairs there is the cafe (can't book tables though).

Merewether Beach Hotel is across the road - typical pub food.

Wickham Boatshed - near the marina, casual cafe, yummy food though.

Jonahs Restaurant (at Noah's on the Beach Hotel) - restaurant overlooking Newcastle Beach. Lovely food, great view but it doesn't have open air dining.

Honeysuckle Precinct - I am not a huge fan of The Landing, but others like it. Silo is okay. Nagisa is good (Japanese food). Honeysuckle Hotel is good for lunch (pub style food), too crowded/noisy for dinner if you want to hear a conversation. Meet is very good, but no water views.

Scratchleys - lovely, a bit more $$

Customs House Hotel serves decent pub meal, Paymasters Cafe next door has very nice food but is a little more expensive.

Rustica is lovely too.

ETA: Another option is to buy fish n chips from Scotties takeaway (Scott Street, East Newcastle) for a picnic. Short walk south to Newcastle Beach or short walk north to Newcastle foreshore area & harbour.

Plus there is also water views around Lake Macquarie too ...
